BRUNTON TYPE COMPASS
Brunton type compass. Etymologically, compass comes from the Italian bussola, which means little box, and this from the Latin buxis –box-—, in reference to the receptacle that contained and protected the magnetized needle. Some argue that compass is the diminutive of ‘witch’, since in the Renaissance some Europeans thought that an artifact that always pointed to the same geographical point had to be a witch’s thing.
The Brunton brand is known throughout the world for manufacturing robust, high-quality and precise compasses with very special applications. Created and patented in 1894 by David W. Brunton, a Canadian geologist and mining engineer, and Guillermo Ainsworth, an expert watchmaker.
It is an instrument widely used in geology, also widely used by surveyors, foresters and archaeologists.
This compass, also known by the curious name of “pocket transit” began to be manufactured in 1895 in Denver Colorado, and its use spread widely throughout the 20th century.
It comes in a beautiful wooden case and is a perfect gift for lovers of nature and curiosities.
It comes with a small explanatory leaflet about its origins and development.
