EPSTEIN COMPASS
Epstein Compass. The compass is an instrument used for orientation and its foundation is based mainly on the property of magnetized needles. A magnetized needle indicates the magnetic north, which is slightly different in each area of the planet. It is also different from the geographic north.
The magnetized needle indicates the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field, pointing towards the North Pole and South Pole. As a curious note, it must be said that there are only two areas of the world where it is not useful, at the poles. The reason is the convergence of the lines of force that the Earth’s magnetic field has.
To use this device correctly, you have to hold it as firm and flat as possible. This is the best way to use it. It can be used on a map on a surface as smooth as possible, which will give us a more accurate reading.
Epstein was a well-known manufacturer of compasses and other navigation objects in the 19th century. His instruments were characterized by their hardness, resistance and reliability.
We present a reproduction of one of their compasses as they were sold more than a century ago.
It comes in a beautiful wooden case and is the ideal gift for friends of nautical, adventure and antiques.
