ESCORIAL SUNDIAL
Escorial sundial. This type of horizontal sundial, called pocket sundials, was commonly used throughout Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Its use was very simple and it was made appropriately for each latitude, and it gave (and gives) the solar time with considerable precision.
There were all kinds of finishes, from the simplest ones for the humblest classes, to those made of ivory with precious stones embedded in them for the wealthiest.
OPERATION
The gnomon is a rope that joins the two boards. When you open it and tighten the rope, the two sides form two sundials (horizontal and vertical). The best ones were made of ivory with inlays of beautiful lacquered drawings.
OUR POCKET SUNDIALS
The sundials that we reproduce date back to the 16th century, with the originals being found in many museums in Europe.
This model called Escorial is shaped like a book and is made of wood and covered in genuine embossed leather. The interior plates are made of brass, which gives it a different and very special finish.
It comes with instructions for use with a brief history of the sundial.
