WHALE TAIL
Whale tail. The blue whale is the largest known animal to have ever roamed the Earth. These majestic marine mammals dominate the oceans at 30 metres in length and weighing up to 180 tonnes. Their tongue alone can weigh as much as an elephant, and their heart as much as a car.
Blue whales reach these enormous dimensions with a diet composed almost exclusively of a tiny shrimp-like animal, krill. At certain times of the year, an adult blue whale consumes about 3.5 tonnes of krill per day.
Found in all the world’s oceans, blue whales usually live alone or in pairs, although they can occasionally be seen in small groups.
These graceful swimmers travel the ocean at more than four knots, but are capable of reaching 17 knots when they are restless. Blue whales are among the loudest animals on the planet. They make distinct pulses, grunts and moans, and it is believed that under optimal conditions, blue whales can hear each other from over 1,500 kilometres away. Scientists believe that, in addition to communication, they use these vocalisations, along with their excellent hearing, to navigate by sonar in the dark depths of the ocean.
LONGEVITY
Blue whales are among the longest-lived animals on Earth. Average lifespan is estimated to be between 80 and 90 years.
Blue whales have few predators, although they have been known to suffer attacks from sharks and orcas, and many are killed or injured when they collide with large ships. Today, blue whales are classified as an endangered species on the World Conservation Union Red List.
