EXPLORER COMPASS
Our explorer compass is made of brass. It has a very solid body, which gives it a very robust appearance. It also has a safety lock to lock the magnetic needle when not in use. The interior is decorated with an old map and on the outside a compass rose.
“Etymologically, the word compass comes from the Italian bussola, which means a small box, and this from the Latin buxis – box, in reference to the receptacle that contained and protected the magnetic needle. Some argue that compass is the diminutive of ‘witch’, since in the Renaissance some Europeans thought that an artifact that always pointed to the same geographical point had to be a witch’s thing.”
“The truth is that magnetism has fascinated humans for millennia. Greeks and the Chinese were the first to experiment with magnets and discover that lodestone, a type of iron known today as magnetite, had a remarkable force of attraction. The Chinese were the first to discover that a piece of lodestone, moving within a circle, always points in the same direction.” (Pedro Gargantilla)
It is presented in a wooden box, which makes this compass a perfect gift for walkers and adventurers.
It is accompanied by a small booklet with the history of the compass and how it works.
We can use it as a key ring or as a pendant. Please indicate your preference in the comments section when placing your order. By default we will always send you the key ring unless otherwise indicated.
