The so-called Jacob’s ladder or magic ladder is one of the best-known optical toys. Although it is not confirmed, it is said that a toy with similar characteristics was found in the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, so it could be deduced that the Egyptians were the inventors of this curious linking system between the tablets, by which and simply by turning Turn the handle 180º, they “magically” change position giving the viewer the opposite face of the one they were seeing. There are also historical reviews that affirm that the artisans of ancient Mexico also manufactured this curious instrument.
In Victorian England it became very popular, usually representing soldiers of the time or such famous people as Queen Victoria herself and Prince Albert, of which our copy is a reproduction.
We also have another variant of the same game with the image of the two most famous characters in universal literature: Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.
